News & Notes 2005

Great news for Amy (Wood) ('99) and Cory Omand -- Amy is pregnant and doing fabulous!  She just finished the fall semester at business school (check out her ramblings at http://www.omands.com/amy/). They are going in for the sonagram in early January - Amy is sure its a boy.  The better question is whether he/she will row port or starboard.  Congratulations Amy and Cory!

Karen Rancourt ('97) got engaged over Thanksgiving.  Karen and Joe both live in the South Jersey area, where Karen is a teacher in a private school for children with disabilities. They met on the mission trip for their church this past summer and have been together ever since.  They became fast friends, and Karen cannot be happier (her email about him actually bubbles with excitment). The wedding date is not set yet, but they are looking at October 2006.  They might follow Melissa and Jonah Davenport's beach theme - except in Ocean City, NJ.

Lauren Kelly ('00) and Roberto Ugarte were engaged at the top of La Sagrada familia in Barcelona in March.  They will be married in June 2007 on Cape Cod, after they both graduate from Boston University School of Medicine.  Nikki Wright (99) and Tara Galvin (02) will be bridesmaids.  They plan to continue living in Boston, with Lauren's dog, during their Residencies.

GRA is sad to announce that Mary Terese McShea, 77, died On Friday, October 21, 2005. Mary was the mother of John McShea (C'77, L'81) who rowed on the Heavyweight Crew. Mary had been living at John and Ann Marie's home.  Relatives and friends gathered for her Funeral Mass at St. Katharine of Siena Church inWayne, PA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Edmond's Home for Children, 320 S. Roberts Road, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.  John's e-mail address is jmcshea@mcshea-tecce.com

Marie Frank ('01)  is planning a March 11, 2006 wedding to Jason Jones. They met one day while she was at work - he noticed that she left her car's lights on, and went up to her to tell her.  What a great story! Marie and Jason will be married in Las Vegas;  following their wedding they plan to go skydiving together!  Marie is living in Boston now, finishing her masters at Boston University.  They will live in Oakland, California after the wedding.  Congratulations Marie and Jason!

Denise Kersten ('99) and Eric Willis were married on September 10, 2005, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Denise's hometown.  Melissa (Conradi) Davenport ('99) wass Denise's Maid of Honor and many other Hoyas were in attendance.  Denise and Eric are both freelance writers and plan to live in D.C.  Click here for photos.

Sarah Johnson Brown ('97) gave birth to a beautiful baby boy Joshua on May 4, 2005.  Joshua is their second child - Michael is two years old and is taking well to being a big brother.  Sarah is lucky to have younger sister Kate Johnson ('01) in Chicago with her to help with diaper duty and the like.  Sarah and family will be moving from Chicago to the DC area sometime this summer.   Congratulations!

On April 9, 2005 Tom Shumaker (F'99) married Maja Fabula in Tucson, Arizona. The two met in London in the spring of 1998 and now live in New York. Incidentally, Maja won the women's lightweight 4+ at the 1999 Dad Vail Regatta rowing for Emory University. Other notable Hoyas at the wedding included Jonathan Weiner (B’99), JP van Arsdale (B’01), Colin Kronewitter (C’01), and John Kelly (F'83). Former Georgetown President Rev. Leo J. O'Donovan presided over the wedding. Tom has recently formed Renal Cell Racing, a non-profit that will use triathlons and other endurance sporting events as a means to raise money for the University of Michigan Urological Center, the Kidney Cancer Association, and other cancer related charities. The marquee event for RCR’s first year will be Ironman France (which will take place in Nice in June 2006). Tom was inspired by his father, Tom Shumaker, Sr., (C'69), who after being kidney cancer free for the past ten years, was recently diagnosed with a recurrent form of the disease for which he will soon be treated at the University of Michigan.
