Hoyas Fall to Dutch Crew at Henley
Thursday, July 1, 2004
The Georgetown University Lightweights’ run at the Henley Royal Regatta in England ended today when they fell to the Dutch crew DSR Proteus-Eretes. Georgetown was outweighed by about 30 lbs per man by the Dutch crew, yet the Georgetown-Proteus duel proved one of the best races of the day. With the crews separated by no more than half a length down the one mile and 550 yard course, Proteus fought off challenge after challenge from the resourceful Hoyas. Proteus opened the lead to the final margin of three-quarters length in the final few strokes. The winning time of 6:57 was the second fastest time of the day (the Navy Lightweights rowed a 6:56 in defeating Nottingham).
Coach Andy Belden praised the crew’s efforts, especially given the strong headwind, conditions that typically favor the heavier crew. “We simply ran into a bigger, stronger crew, but we rowed well and raced our hardest” he said. Others also noted the crew’s efforts. After the race, legendary Harvard coach Harry Parker, who followed the race on his bike, approached the crew and complimented the oarsmen for their strong showing.
