Georgetown Heads to Henley Regatta

The lightweight men's eight is competing in the Temple Challenge Cup at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. Other notable American crews in this event include national lightweight champion Naval Academy and the Harvard Freshman. The regatta runs through the 4th of July, although crews must win each day in a head-to-head race in order in advance in their bracket and remain in the racing.

The crew decided to cross the pond to after ending the regular season with the silver medal at the Lightweight Collegiate National Championship at the IRA regatta. Before that the lightweights finished third at the Eastern Sprints. Both finishes were the best that any Georgetown crew has ever posted at this level of competition. Navy won the Eastern Sprints and the IRAs, setting up the possibility of another head to head meeting between the Georgetown and Navy lightweights at Henley.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first Georgetown crew to race at Henley. In 1979, Mark Wessel ('79), Peter Raddell ('81), Dave McAneny ('79), and Jim Costello ('79) competed in the the straight four event. JJ Forster coached the crew, and Greg Carroll accompanied the crew to England. The foursome made it to the semi-finals.
