Altman and Carcagno finished fifth in the event at last year's championships and had set winning a medal as their goal for this year's competition. The duo did just that, winning a bronze medal with a time of 6:41.05. It marked the first time the U.S. has ever won a medal in the event at the World Championships.
Altman and Carcagno were in fourth place at the 1,000-meter mark, before they overtook the Netherlands to win the bronze medal. Denmark won the gold medal, with a time of 6:35.73. Germany clocked 6:37.36 to claim the silver medal.
In Sept. 2002, Altman and Carcagno became the first Americans to reach the finals of the lightweight men's pair event at the World Rowing Championships in Seville, Spain.
