Georgetown Crews Compete at
40th Head of the Charles Regatta;
Alums Come Out to Cheer
October 24, 2004
Boston, MA -- Six Georgetown crews raced on a wind-shortened course at the 40th Head of the Charles Regatta. The lightweight men and women each boated an eight and a four in their respective events while the heavyweight men and women boated eights for the championship eight event. The course was shortened from 3.1 miles to 2.4 miles due to strong winds down in the basin.
All six Georgetown entries were loaded with sophomores: five in the heavy men's eight, four in each of the the women's eights, and three in the light men's eight. This youth movement bodes well for the crews over the next three years.
The lightweight men had the best showing of the day with a fifth place overall finish. The Hoyas were third among college crews in the event, 8.5 seconds behind defending national champion Navy and 0.8 seconds off of Princeton. Click here for the complete story.
Alumni, parents and friends of Georgetown Crew gathered to enjoy the
regatta at a lunch on Saturday sponsored by New England alumni and spearheaded
by men from the classes 1979-81. Now that the Head of the Charles is a
two-day event, the undergraduates can join their families and the alums
in a picnic on Saturday before getting down to work on Sunday. With weigh-ins
behind them, even the lightweights were able to partake of the feast.
Over 100 people were in attendance. Alums Cam Peters, Alex Chapman, Greg
Moffatt, John Carey, Lenny Hill, Dave McAneny, JJ Forster and many others
were on hand to meet the current crews and share old memories.
