Heavyweight Men Defend Title at Jesuit Invitational

March 20, 2004

On March 20, the Heavyweights started their season with a defense of its Jesuit Invitational Regatta title which it had won for three consecutive years since joinging the regatta. Led by the win in the Regatta's premier event the men's heavyweight eight as well as second place finishes in the Novice eight and second varsity eight events, Georgetown captured the Canonball Points trophy despite competing with onlky men while the majority of schools fielded boats in both the men's and women's events.

In the varsity eight event with unusually calm water and little wind for this time of year on the Camden, Cooper River course, the crew jumped out and had taken a few seats on the field after the first high 15 strokes. The crew soon settled into a nice rythm at 34 to 35 beats per minute and capitalized in the beginning of the third 500 by extending its lead to open water. The crew cruised to a 4.97 second finish over runner up Holy Cross and was the 4th gold medal and cannonball points trophy for the 4 seniors in the boat, Tim Lepczyk, Rob McLane, Andrew Brown, and Eric Hilmo.

In the men's second varsity and freshman/novice eights race, the Hoyas were not so lucky and in each case lost to a now deeper St. Joseph's program.
