Crew Places Third at GW Invitational

April 10, 2004

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown crew finished third in the final team standings at the 17th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on the Potomac River on April 10. Rowers had near-ideal racing conditions with a slight tailwind and a moderate tail current. A cool and cloudy morning with temperatures in the 50s gave way to a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the low 60s.

The highlight for Georgetown came in the Novice Women's event. The Hoyas won their morning heat, but in a slower time than Navy and Tennesee in the other heat. The plucky freshman women came back in the afternoon to beat both crews by half a length in an exciting finish.

The U.S. Naval Academy captured the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy for the third straight year. The Midshipmen crews took four first-place finishes, one second-place finish and a pair of thirds to amass 65 points, 20 more than second-place Saint Joseph's. Georgetown earned 36 points to place third in the team point standings.

Regatta Points:

Navy was awarded the Oliver T. Carr Bowl given to the fastest men's heavyweight eight shell. Georgetown won the petite finals in both the varsity and JV events.

The lightweight men and women did not participate in the regatta, but took the weekend off.
