Crew Launches New Shell Named for Georgetown Jesuit Community

April 22, 2004

Washington, DC — The heavyweight men launched a new shell today, to be named the Georgetown Jesuit Community. Father Brian McDermott, SJ, blessed the new shell, an eight-oared Vespoli M2, with a prayer and sprinkling of holy water. The boat was generously donated by Rick and Carole Newcombe, parents of heavyweight captain Jack Newcombe. A formal dedication ceremony is planned for later this spring.

The boat is named for the Jesuit community at Georgetown University to honor their contribution to the life of the university, and to the education and growth of its students. Georgetown University was founded in 1789 by Jesuit priest John Carroll and is the oldest Catholic university in America.

Rick Newcombe and Brian McDermott, SJ, join coach Tony Johnson and members of the heavyweight crew for the launching of the "Georgetown Jesuit Community”
