Heavyweight Men Defeated by Syracuse, Temple
April 24, 2004
Early Saturday, the Georgetown Heavyweights took to the waters of Lake Onondaga outside of Syracuse, NY for a race with the host Orangemen and the Temple Owls. The day was marked by very tough conditions that consisted of a 20+ miles per hour headwind that led to a strong chop, with white caps for the first 1000 meters on the lake. Unable to handle the conditions, all of the Georgetown crews struggled.
After a week of good practices, the varsity expected to be in a tight race with Syracuse and Temple, whose time the Hoyas had beaten in the GW Invitational two weeks earlier. However, the Hoyas were dominated by the conditions and were unable to row effectively or find the speed it had shown recently. Georgetown finished with a time of 7:00.5 — 23 seconds behind winner Temple.
The second varsity held close to the pack for the first 1000 meters and was in the middle of the race — several seats up on Temple and only a few down to Syracuse. As the last 1000 meters unfolded, the crew failed to keep with Syracuse who pulled away for a victory in a time of 6:54.5. Georgetown finished in a time of 7:13.1, 6 seconds behind rival Temple.
The freshman race did not prove any better. The novice eight was defeated
by a strong undefeated Syracuse crew that has posted victories over Cornell,
BU, Navy, and others.
