News from GRA President Drew Schreiber
Dear Alumni and Friends of Georgetown Crew,
I wanted to give you a mid-winter update from the Georgetown Rowing Association (GRA). Thank you to all who have made a gift or pledge to GRA this year. We are in the midst of the student-athlete phonathon, which is going well. If you have not made a gift yet this year, go to www.guhoyas.com or call (202) 687-6308.
There are a number of very exciting events coming up in the next few weeks!
I'll cover three areas and try to do it quickly: the current crew (what they have been doing and what is upcoming), GRA events, and a head's up on an email you will receive from GRA in the next week or so.
The Team:
· Head Coach Tony Johnson and Lightweight Coach Andy Belden led
60 members of the men's heavyweight and lightweight team to Columbia,
SC, over winter break. The week of training went very well and gave a
good base to the off water workouts going on now.
· The team is "enjoying" the use of 25 ergs purchased
by GRA over winter break. Thank you to our donors who gave money towards
this purchase. The equipment is in a new on-campus erg room at Yates Field
House. Along with the 35 ergs at Thompson's Boathouse, the new ergs give
the coaches a much easier time scheduling morning workouts. As well, the
current student-athletes have a much more accessible erg room on campus
in order to get extra workouts in the afternoon.
· All four squads (approximately 150 athletes and coaches) will
be traveling to Clemson, SC, over spring break for training on Lake Hartwell.
· The race season begins with the Jesuit Invitational on March
19th in Camden, NJ. This race will be the only time in 2005 that all four
squads of the crew will race in one place. We would love to see a great
turnout from the alumni community to support the team at this race. Carolyne
Dilgard-Clark ('99) is coordinating the alumni effort. We will send an
email to you with more information as we get closer to the race date.
· The other races to look out for more updates on are the Men's
and Women's Eastern Sprints. Both are on Sunday, May 15th. The men's Sprints
are in Worcester, MA. The women's Sprints are in Camden, NJ. If one of
the squads is in your area, please root them on to victory. We'll also
post results on the team website.
· To access the spring racing schedules go to www.guhoyas.com and
click on men's and women's crew for complete details.
Upcoming GRA Events
· Northeastern Alumni: The annual pre-season crew reception in
New York City is next Thursday, Feb. 24th from 6-8 pm at Sotheby's on
72nd and York. Tony Johnson and members of the coaching staff will give
a preview of the racing season and an update on the boathouse. R.S.V.P.
to Hoyas Unlimited at (202) 687-6308 or email: hoysunlimited@georgetown.edu
· Women: Following the NYC reception, a group of alumnae will be
meeting for dinner to work on plans to celebrate the 30th Anniversary
of women's rowing at Georgetown. Please email Kearney Posner (kearney.posner@radian.biz)
if you can make the dinner. If you are unable to make the NY reception
and want to contribute to the 30th Anniversary effort, please contact
Carolyne Dilgard-Clark (girlsjustwanna21@hotmail.com ).
· Mid-Atlantic Alumni: GRA will host a "Meet the Coaches and
Captains" Lunch on Saturday, February 26th at Noon in Washington,
DC. The lunch will be in the Leavey Center in Salon A. R.S.V.P. to Hoyas
Unlimited at (202) 687-6308 or email: hoysunlimited@georgetown.edu
Important GRA Developments
· Neil Lane ('85) and David Don ('93) lead a group to review and
update the GRA bylaws. The bylaws had not been updated since they were
originally written in 1974 and needed to be updated to take into account
the changes in the crew, the university and the need to be in compliance
with rules now governing the crew.
· Former GRA Presidents Jeff Resetarits ('91) and Dave Don have
led a Nominating Committee for the GRA Board under the guidelines of the
revised bylaws.
· Within a week, Jeff and Dave will be sending to you via email
the bylaws and a slate of candidates for the GRA Board. We need the GRA
community to vote on both the new bylaws and the Board. We appreciate
your attention to these matters.
I hope that you now have a sense of where the team and GRA are as we set up for a great racing season! Please join us in NY, DC, and/or Philly/Camden over the next few weeks and look for more updates as we move through the racing season. www.georgetowncrew.org
Warmest Regards & Never Row,
Drew
