Hoya Lightweights Capture Medal at Women's Sprints at Cooper River

The Hoyas raced in the 2006 Eastern Women's Sprint Championship on Sunday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., on May 14, 2006.

In the lightweight varsity eight race, the Hoyas finished third, less than 10 seconds behind first-place Wisconsin, with a time of 7:23.38. Georgetown was also third in the novice four, crossing in 8:41.46, again less than 10 second behind the winning boat. In the varsity four heats, the Hoyas qualified for the Petite final and ended up second (eighth overall) with a time of 8:38.45.

The varsity heavyweight women finished 4th in the third level final (18th overall).

Despite weather predictions, the team couldn’t have asked for better weather with sunny skies and light wind. Parents, alumni and friends supported the team from the Georgetown tent along the banks by the finish line. Shortly after the lunch break, the group gathered for a dedication of a new boat for the lightweight women’s team.  The boat was donated by the parents of Caitlin McKenna, class of ’06 and was named the "Ocior Euro." During one of Caitlin’s honors research classes at Georgetown she discovered that the name had been placed on a banner that the students of the Visitation nursing school had made to support the rowing team in their first race. Translated from Latin the phrase means "Swifter than Wind."  Special thanks to all of those who helped to coordinate the tent which was full of great food, beverages, grilled hamburgers and hotdogs and special cakes for the graduating seniors.
